Residents in Scarborough Borough Council, who are looking to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, are being offered practical help to stage street parties in their communities.
William and Kate will tie the knot on 29 April, with the Friday declared a Royal Bank Holiday.
The occasion is likely to spark a carnival atmosphere across the country, with thousands of patriotic Brits tuning into televisions and big screens.
Scarborough Borough Council has now revealed it is to hold three free training days for those residents and groups looking to stage street parties and will also help them cut through red tape and form-filling in the run-up to the ceremony.
Cllr Janet Jefferson, proud Royalist and cabinet member for tourism and culture, said: “The visit of the Queen to Scarborough last year showed the strength of support there is for the Royal Family in this borough and I’m expecting there to be a similar buzz in the run-up to the wedding of William and Kate.
“I would love to see that old-fashioned sense of community spirit alive and well in our streets, parks and open spaces and I’m delighted the council is able to offer some practical help to groups and organisations thinking about holding a party.”
The training days which will offer residents advice on how to stage their own street parties take place at 10am on Wednesday 2 February at the Town Hall in Scarborough, at 10am on Friday 11 February at the Evron Centre in Filey, and at 6pm on Wednesday 9 February at Church House in Flowergate, Whitby.
Council officers Matthew Joseph and Gemma Ryan will take people through the necessary steps and will design bespoke training manuals for the groups wanting to stage a street party. The manuals will include help dealing with things like road closures, insurance, entertainment licenses, and even information about how to recoup any costs.
The format of the street parties will be entirely down to residents’ themselves, though Matthew suggests they may be similar to the street events held in the Borough last year as part of the Big Lunch celebrations, which this year will take place on 5 June.
